S.A. Salviander examines and perceives life from ever-changing angles in his vignettes and short stories. He perfects them like gem stones, but not within the old-fashioned confines; he will surprise and shock you with strange edges and cuts, which will turn the normal every-day situations completely upside-down, so that the depth might be on the surface and surface somewhere very, very deep…
The logic does not have to march on in the normal left-right-left-right manner, but it can happily hop around on one leg, jump very suddenly to the side or up, or draw dazzling rainbows on the sky with the roller-skates of imagination.
The traditional meanings and definitions of words are tested sometimes very profoundly, as the kaleidoscopic images of life will flash by so fast that it is almost insurmountable to tell whether they reflect from normal mirrors or from those that twist the reflection at the amusement parks.
However skewed the images might come across at times, though, behind each and every one of them is a serious and mature process of search for the truth and for the deeper meaning for what it takes to be a human. It is just done in a very unconventional way to stir up thoughts that would not arise otherwise.
A considerate reader is definitely rewarded with many adrenaline-charged discoveries, disconcerting images, and confusing questions during the trek through this book.
The assessment upon the meaning of life might result in being someone else’s pogo stick or a yo-yo, but irrespective of something the reader would think of as an end statement for a story, all the biases are launched to the space like a New Year’s Eve fireworks and nothing is really as simple, or holy, as it might seem first…
‘The countdown has started’.

Normally, postmodern absurdism leaves me cold. I had my fling with the Dadaists, modernists, postmodernists, postpostmodernists, etc., when I was in my twenties, a geological age ago, and grew out of their limited world view.Mr. Salviander, however, uses it as a function of dream-logic to get at deeper truths about human nature. As a reader, you have two things on hand. One, figuring out what is going on in the story, and two, how you are responding to what is going on in the story. Since Mr. Salviander uses dream-logic rigorously, his stories are both engaging and understandable, with a touch of work on the reader’s side. He doesn’t give you anything on a silver platter. You’re going to have chew on this shorts more than you think you should for something so short. His perspective isn’t American, since he grew up in Finland, but it is certainly human. There’s a fatalism there that isn’t normally part of the American way of thinking. This serves to flense away externalities and lay bare the challenge in each story.
The novel contains one-hundred short stories of not more than a handful of pages long at the longest. Somewhat like a Twilight Zone episode, the characters and settings are there to set the stage for the end. Although the endings are all different, they are very similar in that they offer the reader a dilemma: what happened and how do you respond?
Mr. Salviander is an astute writer of the human condition in a style all his own.
While it’s not for everyone, I’d recommend it without hesitation.

Thoughts? edition by S A Salviander H J Taavila Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It would be an understatement to call this book excellent. The highest praise I can give is my experience, over all, with the book today. An unconventional book requires an unconventional review.
I started reading it at the laundromat this afternoon, and I could have easily spent the rest of my evening at the laundromat reading it as well, but I forced myself to put it down as being at the laundromat isn't particularly pleasant and I couldn't exactly enjoy this book with a glass of bourbon there, so I finished the laundry as quickly as possible, made the quick drive home, picked the tablet back up, and poured a glass of bourbon.
I thought of a particular friend of mine immediately while reading the foreword. Not having purchased a gift for Christmas for this friend, it seemed like a good idea, and to my credit, I did consider finishing the book before gifting a copy--that just seems to be a wise decision in general. However, as I read, bourbon in hand, I reached a point where the book was just so damn good that I simply could not continue reading it without sharing it with someone whom I thought would enjoy it at least as much as I was enjoying it. If you have a friend like that, you'll understand when you read it. In any case, I pried my eyes away from the tablet just long enough to send a gift copy of the book with Christmas wishes and an abjuration to read it as soon as possible because it is too good, and then I resumed reading, and have now finished reading, and am now writing this review.
The book is entitled "Thoughts?" and the stated goal is to make people think. And I am thinking. But at the same time, I'd rather not pollute the experience for potential readers with too much specificity. Salviander's sense of the absurd and the surreal is fantastic--brilliant even. The writing is crisp, biting, and intelligent. The book contains 100 short stories, many of which would be classified as flash-fiction today. Many of these vignettes--these thoughts--are morose, dark, tragic. A couple in particular even brought a tear to my eye--no mean feat in literature. But there are some riotously funny and lighter bits in there as well (and often while in the process of being dark or tragic.) Nothing in it could be regarded as treacle; even the lighter thoughts have depth and gravity. It's all well-grounded with a refreshing lack of pretense. There is something for everyone who loves absurdism and surrealism. If the book has a weakness, it is only that it is just now being published for an English-speaking audience--20 years ago, it would certainly have made serious waves in some circles over here as well--but that has more to do with the zeitgeist and the current literary scene than it does with the book in itself.
Rather than succumbing to the temptation of sharing my favorite thoughts in "Thoughts?", I'll close with this if you like absurdist, surrealistic flash-fiction, then stop reading the reviews and read this book, it's more than worth every penny. For me it was an easy 5/5, and if paperbacks should become available, I'll be ecstatic to purchase another copy.
